france_info = France is fighting for its homeland and the recapturing of territory lost in the Franco-Prussian war of 1870.;;Its main focus should be against Germany on the Western front.
britain_info = Great Britain is allied with France and will not remain neutral for long.;;The expected German invasion of neutral Belgium will surely deteriorate British relations with the Central Powers even further.
germany_info = Germany is Austria-Hungary's strongest ally. Their mobilisation will complete soon.
austria_info = The Austria-Hungarian Empire has started the war by demanding harsh terms from the Kingdom of Serbia. This was merely an excuse to go to war.
russia_info = Russia has a defensive pact with Serbia, which guarantees if Serbia is attacked, then Russia will come to its aid.Also Russia's main strength lies in its endless supply of fresh troops.
turkey_info = German naval presence near the Ottoman capital of Constantinople may speed up their entry into the war.;;A defensive pact with Bulgaria guarantees that when either is attacked, the other will come to its aid.
belgium_info = Belgium has declared neutrality in the war, but as a wedge between France and Germany it may end up getting invaded sooner or later.
serbia_info = Serbia is being invaded by the much larger Austrian-Hungarian Empire.;;Its main task is to hold out as long as possible until its allies can send reinforcements.
italy_info = Declaring war on Italy will certainly displease the following nations:;• Switzerland;• The United States
netherlands_info = Declaring war on the Netherlands will certainly displease the following nations:;• Great Britain

portugal_info = Declaring war on Portugal will certainly displease the following nations:;• Spain;• The United States;• Great Britain
switzerland_info = Switzerland is neutral and will remain so unless attacked first. Strong relationship with the Italians means any aggression toward Switzerland will surely affect Italy's position in the war.
romania_info = War with Romania should please its neighbouring rival Bulgaria.
bulgaria_info = Bulgaria has a defensive pact with the Ottoman Empire. When either nation is attacked, the other will come to its aid.
norway_info = Declaring war on Norway will certainly displease the following nations:;• Sweden;• Denmark;• The United States;• Great Britain
arabia_info = The tribes of the Arabian peninsula are rebellious toward their Ottoman rulers. A successful Allied offensive in the Middle East may trigger a full scale rebellion.
persia_info = Persia is formally neutral. In reality, Persian forces are affected by the rivalry between the Entente and the Central Powers. Western interest in Persia is based on its significant oil reserve and its strategic location.

soft = GRASSLAND
hard = STEPPE
difficult = ROUGH
mountain = MOUNTAINS
forest = FOREST
desert = DESERT
dunes = DUNES
swamp = SWAMP
water = OPEN WATER
channel = CANAL

soft_info = Grassland is soft, easy terrain. It provides few cover and is easy to attack on, but allows deep entrenchment.
hard_info = The hard soil of steppe terrain is hard to entrench. The vast open plains provide little natural protection.
difficult_info = Rough terrain offers good natural protection for the defender, while allowing additional entrenchment.
mountain_info = Mountains are very rough, hard to effectively fight on. It is particularly easy to defend, and the harsh nature of the landscape makes attacking a slow and ineffective business.
forest_info = Forests have a hard soil full of roots, making entrenchment difficult. Additionally, the dense trees offer protection for attackers, making this terrain type hard to defend.
desert_info = Desert terrain is flat and well suited for entrenchment, but the heath of the climate makes movement slower.
dunes_info = Sand dunes and extreme heath make this terrain very unsuitable for waging modern warfare. Entrenchments will be blown away by sandstorms and the soft soil will blunt artillery barrages.
swamp_info = Swamps are both difficult to defend and attack. The wet soil makes deep entrenchment impossible, but various lakes and mud make makes attacking very slow. Artillery shells may not even explode in the wet mud.
water_info = Water is where ships sail.
channel_info = Canals allow movement of naval units through land masses. Ships cannot stop on a canal hex, but can use them to move from one end to another. Capturing any hex in a canal will stop the enemy from using it.
city_info = One newly produced unit can be deployed in a city per turn.;;Cities provide half supply to any units that can be reached through friendly territory, regardless of the distance.
capital_info = Capital cities allows the deployment of 2 newly produced units per turn. A nation needs at least one Capital in order to produce units, not including Capitals captured from the enemy.;;Capitals can provide full supply to units within 30 hexes as long as a path can be traced through friendly territory.
port_info = Ports allow the deployment and repair of naval units. Ships can only be upgraded and deployed in ports of their own nationality, but can be repaired in any friendly port. Ports provide a powerful combat bonus for their current unit, while national ports (not captured ones) provide a lesser combat bonus to all friendly ships within a radius of 3 hexes.
fortress_info = Fortresses provides a combat bonus to their garrison. They provide half supply only if they have any PP production. In this case, the fortress basically acts as a fortified city. Fortresses without PP production provide half supply to its garrison only.

smallgarrison_info = Small Garrison these forces are used to protect cities behind the frontline. They can hold such positions against attacks until reinforcements arrive to bolster your defence.
garrison_info = Garrisons are cheap defensive units ideally suited to plug gaps behind the frontline. They can hold such positions against small scale attacks but will fall quickly under a determined assault with Artillery support.
infantry_info = Infantry units are cheap all purpose units. They are particularly effective at defending entrenched positions. Early Infantry lacks the offensive strength to attack fortified positions. They are the ideal units to hold the frontline.
cavalry_info = Cavalry units are most effective when used in clear terrain against weakened enemy units. While ineffective against entrenched opponents, they deal additional damage when successfully forcing an enemy unit to retreat.
armour_info = Armour units represent Infantry supported by armoured tanks. These machines are designed to overrun enemy defenses, minimizing casualties to the Infantry behind. Early Armour is flawed and little more effective than standard Infantry - while much more expensive - but later developments make them a very effective offensive weapon. They can break through enemy lines, cut supply lines and encircle whole armies.
artillery_info = Heavy calibre artillery pieces are massed into Artillery units. These are essential for breaking through enemy defenses. While very effective at weakening enemy strength and effective without any repercussions, each bombardment does consume a vast amount of Ammunition. Therefore the use of Artillery should be restricted to crucial parts of an offensive or counter-attack.
railgun_info = Railroad Guns are heavy long range guns restricted to railroad hexes. They are much less powerful than standard Artillery but have a higher range. Use them against strategic targets otherwise out of range.
armouredtrain_info = Armoured Trains are well protected from regular bullet fire and pack a lot of firepower. Their restriction to railroads is both a strength and weakness: They can reposition quickly over long distances, but only there where the rails can lead them.
armouredcar_info = These units have a high movement speed, but limited attack strength. They retreat quickly when attacked, before absorbing too much casualties. This makes them useless to hold the line but difficult to destroy. As a result, their most efficient use is reconnaissance, harassment and cutting enemy lines of supply.
cruiser_info = Cruisers are fast and relatively cheap, the workhorse of any navy. They should be used for scouting, hunting for enemy merchants and anti-submarine warfare. While incomparable with a Battleship in battle, they do serve a purpose in large naval battles. Dealing a finishing blow to a damaged Battleship or keeping enemy Cruisers and Submarines at bay are jobs better suited to a Cruiser than a Battleship.
battleship_info = Battleships are powerful but expensive and time consuming to produce. Their main purpose is to oppose enemy battlefleets and gain or maintain naval superiority. Additionally they are capable of bombarding shoreline defences, acting as naval artillery units. Just like a land-based artillery bombardment, this consumes Ammunition.
submarine_info = Subs are hard to detect and only appear when launching an attack, or if an enemy ship accidentally discovers them by attempting to move through them. Submarines are invisible to the enemy until they attack. It is revealed for 1 turn when it attacks or when an enemy unit tries to move to its hex. Only units that have not yet moved can attack a submarine. Thus, only adjacent naval units or air/artillery units already within reach can attack a revealed submarine.
mining_vessel_info = description
aircraft_carrier_info = description
convoy_info = Convoys automatically spawn on the edges of the map. They carry production points and manpower for their own nation. These resources will be transferred to your stockpiles when a convoy arrives at one of its nation's home ports.
transport_info = When a land unit is being transported across water it turns into a transport ship. The transported unit can be disembarked on any non-neutral coastal hex. A transport ship cannot attack naval targets, but the unit can still launch amphibious attacks against coastal land units. Such an attack will suffer from a combat penalty.
fighter_info = Fighters provide reconnaissance and air protection against enemy air units. They are also effective at weakening efficiency of enemy ground units.
bomber_info = Bombers are effective for long distance strategic bombardment. Later war models are also reasonably effective at damaging ground units.
zeppelin_info = Airships are effective for long distance strategic bombardment. Once anti-submarine weapons become available, they also become effective at attacking the latter.
arabsmallgarrison_info = Small Garrison these forces are used to protect cities behind the frontline. They can hold such positions against attacks until reinforcements arrive to bolster your defence.
arabgarrison_info = Garrisons are cheap defensive units ideally suited to protect cities and fortresses behind the frontline. They can hold such positions against attacks but will fall quickly under a determined assault with Artillery support.
arabinfantry_info = Arabian rebel units are much weaker than other nation's regular Infantry units, but have a better offensive capability than Garrisons. They also move quicker through Dunes terrain making them hard to catch.
arabcavalry_info = The irregular Arab Cavalry are fast raider units, but weaker than other nation's Cavalry units.
pre-dreadnought_info = Pre-Dreadnought are less powerful units,than Dreadnoughts and less expensive too. The loss of Pre-dreadnought units can have an impact on the course of the war, they can also serve as sea based artillery capable of bombarding coastal land targets.
battlecruiser_info = Battlecruisers were similar in size and cost to a dreadnought, and typically carried the same kind of heavy guns, but battlecruisers generally carried less armour and were faster.
destroyer_info = Destroyer flotilla, during World War 1, the main function of destroyers was to protect their own battle fleet from enemy torpedo attacks and to make such attacks on the dreadnoughts of the enemy. Destroyers were also very good in an ASW roll, attacking enemy submarines.
armouredcruiser_info = Armoured Cruisers While incomparable with a Dreadnought in battle, they do serve a purpose in large naval battles. Dealing a finishing blow to a damaged Dreadnought or keeping enemy Light Cruisers at bay are jobs best suited to an Armoured Cruiser than a Dreadnought. Additionally they are capable of bombarding shoreline defences.

briefing_1914_1_1 = The Serbian army is ill-equipped but battle-hardened from the Balkan Wars and has taken up positions in mountainous terrain. The Austrians have numeric superiority, but will soon have to face the Russian army in the East.
briefing_1914_1_2 = Following the imminent outbreak of hostilities the French intend to follow their pre-war offensive plan and take back the region of Alsace-Lorraine .
briefing_1914_1_3 = The Russian Empire has access to almost unlimited manpower. Once mobilisation is completed, its armies are expected to overrun Germany's eastern territories. Until that time their other Allies will have to hold back the Germans and Austrians on their own.
briefing_1914_1_4 = The Entente alliance is large but divided. If they can cooperate effectively, the Allies will soon bring down the Central Powers.

briefing_1914_2_1 = The Serbian enemy is ill-equipped but battle-hardened from the Balkan Wars and has taken up positions in mountainous terrain. While our Austrian army has numeric superiority, reinforcements will soon be needed in the east to meet the threat of a Russian invasion.
briefing_1914_2_2 = Germany is expected to begin an attack on France very soon. Both nations are gathering forces near their mutual border, but the Germans intend to bypass enemy positions by sweeping through Belgium.
briefing_1914_2_3 = The Russian Empire has access to huge manpower reserves but its mobilisation is expected to be slow. Even so, fresh German and Austrian armies will soon be required on the Eastern Front.
briefing_1914_2_4 = The Central Powers are thus aiming for a quick victory in Serbia and France, so that they can then turn their attention to Russia:;Paris for lunch, with dinner in St. Petersburg!

briefing_1915_1_1 = The Western Front has turned into a stalemate, but it is important to keep pressure on the Germans. This should make it harder to exploit the disturbingly poor performance of the Russian army on the Eastern Front.
briefing_1915_1_2 = Over the past few months Russia has suffered serious defeats at the hands of Hindenburg's 8th Army. Austro-Hungarian offensives, on the other hand, have been repulsed successfully and the enemy has been pushed back across their own border.
briefing_1915_1_3 = While a strictly naval operation has failed, a naval invasion of the Gallipoli Peninsula should drive the Ottomans from their coastal defences. A push towards their capital at Constantinople should force the Ottomans to sue for peace.
briefing_1915_1_4 = Further East, the British landing in the Persian Gulf has been successful. So far Ottoman forces have been beaten back at every engagement, although the British are suffering from supply problems.
briefing_1915_1_5 = The war is now raging on several fronts. Germany remains the most dangerous opponent, but we can choose to focus our efforts against its weaker allies.

briefing_1915_2_1 = The German Army has planned another attack in France to divert Allied attention from the Eastern Front. This battle will also be an excellent opportunity to test the use of chlorine gas in a combat situation.
briefing_1915_2_2 = On the Eastern Front, the Russians have suffered badly at the hands of Hindenburg's 8th Army over the past few months. Unfortunately the Austro-Hungarian offensives have been much less successful.
briefing_1915_2_3 = After a failed naval operation, the Allies are about to launch a land assault on the Gallipoli Peninsula. Ottoman commanders have had sufficient time to prepare their defences, but their forces are thinly spread along the beaches.
briefing_1915_2_4 = Further East, the British landing in the Arabian Gulf has been successful. So far the Ottoman forces have been driven back at every engagement, but the British are suffering supply problems.
briefing_1915_2_5 = The war is now raging on several fronts. Deciding where to focus our attacks and where to defend will determine the outcome of the war.

briefing_1916_1_1 = The Western front is locked in a stalemate, with the latest Allied offensives ending in failure. Recent reconnaissance has detected German preparations for an attack on the fortress city of Verdun.
briefing_1916_1_2 = The Italian entry into the war has had only a modest impact, but the opening of a new front has diverted a substantial portion of the Austro-Hungarian army from the Balkan and Eastern Fronts.
briefing_1916_1_3 = This came too late for the Serbian army, which was pushed out of Serbia after a joint Austro-Bulgarian offensive outflanked their positions. However, Allied forces have managed to establish a foothold in Salonika, Greece.
briefing_1916_1_4 = The British Expeditionary force in Mesopotamia has pushed too far. Its continuing supply problems since the start of the campaign mean part of the army is now trapped in Kut Al Amara, while the remainder await reinforcements near Basra.
briefing_1916_1_5 = After the failure of the Gallipoli landings and the evacuation of our troops, fresh forces are being built up in Egypt. Another push against the Ottomans through the Sinai desert will have to make up for recent setbacks.
briefing_1916_1_6 = The loss of Verdun would bring an unbearable shame upon the French army. Every soldier knows what to do. They shall not pass!

briefing_1916_2_1 = The Western front is locked in a stalemate, but the exposed French position at Verdun gives us an opportunity for another attack. They should not be able to maintain an effective defence for more than a few weeks.
briefing_1916_2_2 = The Italian entry into the war has forced the already pressured Austrian army to fight on yet another front. Because we hold the high ground, however, the enemy offensives have had little impact so far.
briefing_1916_2_3 = The joint Austro-Bulgarian offensive has finally pushed the Serbian army out of Serbia. While arriving too late to take part in the battle, British and French forces have established a foothold in Salonika, Greece.
briefing_1916_2_4 = The advance of the British Expeditionary force in Mesopotamia has been halted. Suffering from supply problems the British have decided to hold Kut Al Amara, while most of their troops have fallen back to Basra.
briefing_1916_2_5 = Ottoman forces are preparing near the Sinai desert for another attempt to seize the Suez canal from British control.
briefing_1916_2_6 = Overwhelm Verdun's vulnerable defences to strike a fatal blow to the French Army. Their determination to hold this historical town will lead to their doom!

briefing_1917_1_1 = The British and French armies have made preparations for new offensives along the Western Front. Now that new weapons and tactics are available, High Command is confident we can finally break the stalemate.
briefing_1917_1_2 = The Russian economy and army are collapsing under the strain of the war effort. Revolution is spreading and the Tsar has been forced to abdicate. It seems only a matter of time before the new government will abandon the war.
briefing_1917_1_3 = In the Middle East, the Ottoman Empire is slowly being pushed back by the British-Indian forces. Supported by the latter, Arab rebels are advancing along the coast of the Arabian Gulf.
briefing_1917_1_4 = Most importantly, the United States have finally declared war on Germany. It will take several months, however, to mobilise their army and ship it across the Atlantic.
briefing_1917_1_5 = Russia might not remain our ally for long, so we should pressure the Germans now, before they can redeploy forces from the Eastern Front to the west.

briefing_1917_2_1 = The Allies have been planning a new offensive along the Western Front. Their commanders have confidence in their new weapons and tactics, but the German High Command is aware of their preparations and has set up strong defences.
briefing_1917_2_2 = The Russian economy and army are collapsing under the strain of the war effort. Revolution is spreading and the Tsar has abdicated. It seems only a matter of time before the new government offers us an armistice.
briefing_1917_2_3 = In the Middle East, the Ottoman Empire is slowly being pushed back by the British-Indian forces. To make matters worse, the Arab revolt is spreading along the coast of the Arabian Gulf.
briefing_1917_2_4 = As expected for some time now the United States have finally declared war on Germany. But it will take them several months to mobilise their army and ship it across the Atlantic.
briefing_1917_2_5 = We should be able to knock Russia out of the war and, before the Americans arrive in force, bring the full weight of our armies to bear in a final assault on the western front!

briefing_1918_1_1 = Large concentrations of German troops on the Western front predict a large scale offensive. Allied strategy relies on defence in depth, delaying and wearing down the enemy rather than preventing their advance.
briefing_1918_1_2 = The recent Italian defeat at the battle of Caporetto has forced the British and French to send reinforcements to this front. These should be able to resist any new Austrian attack following the Russian surrender.
briefing_1918_1_3 = The Balkan front has remained mostly static for more than a year now. A combined Allied force is holding the line, but lacks the equipment for major offensive actions.
briefing_1918_1_4 = The Ottoman Empire is losing ground against the British armies in both Palestine and Mesopotamia. After the capture of Jerusalem in late 1917, the British intend to knock the Ottoman Empire out of the war this year.
briefing_1918_1_5 = American forces are arriving every day, at an ever increasing rate. If the last German offensives can be repelled, victory seems only a matter of time.

briefing_1918_2_1 = The German army is ready for the Kaiserschlacht! By exploiting new infiltration tactics, artillery bombardment schemes and reinforcements from the East we intend to cut the Allied army in half and isolate the British against the North Sea coast.
briefing_1918_2_2 = Following the conquest of Serbia and the surrender of Russia, the Austro-Hungarian army is preparing to follow up its victory at Caporetto with a fresh push on the Italian front.
briefing_1918_2_3 = The Balkan front has remained mostly static for more than a year now. British, French and Italian forces are still holding the borders of Greece, which has saved the remainder of the Serbian army from destruction.
briefing_1918_2_4 = The Ottoman Empire continues to lose ground against the British armies in both Palestine and Mesopotamia. Given the enemy's superiority, their fate will almost certainly be determined by what Germany can achieve on the Western Front.
briefing_1918_2_5 = Take advantage of the German superiority in numbers and our experienced stormtroopers to break through the enemy defences before the stream of fresh American troops turns the tide against us.

tech_industrial_warfare = Industrial Warfare
tech_industrial_warfare_short = Industrial Warfare: Base Defense +4
tech_industrial_warfare_info = Industrialisation and technological improvements demand modernisations of the army, such as camouflaged uniforms and extensive use of machine guns.

tech_assault_tactics = Infiltration Tactics
tech_assault_tactics_short = Infiltration Tactics: Assault +2, Ground Attack +1, Base Defense +1
tech_assault_tactics_info = The classic assault tactics consist of a heavy artillery barrage followed by an infantry attack in massed lines. New infiltration tactics rely on the first attack wave to avoid strong defenses, to infiltrate more rapidly into enemy territory. Subsequent waves of standard infantry then mop up the strongpoints.

tech_submachinegun = Submachine Gun
tech_submachinegun_short = Submachine Gun: Assault +2
tech_submachinegun_info = A light shoulder-fired machine gun is developed with infiltration and fire and movement tactics in mind. These rapidly firing submachine guns are particularly suited for clearing enemy trenches and other close combat situations.

tech_grenade = Infantry Grenade
tech_grenade_short = Infantry Grenade: Assault +1, Base Defense +1
tech_grenade_info = Grenades are essential weapons used against enemy defenses such as dugouts, entrenched positions and concrete fortresses. Grenadiers or bombers are men specifically designated to attack the enemy with grenade attacks.

tech_steel_helmet = Steel Helmet
tech_steel_helmet_short = Steel Helmet: Assault +2, Ground Attack +1, Base Defense +1
tech_steel_helmet_info = The static conditions of trench warfare and the extensive use of artillery is causing a significant rise of head wounds. Replacing the traditional cloth or leather headgear with steel helmets increases protection against shrapnel and even some small arms fire.

tech_flamethrower = Mobile Flamethrower
tech_flamethrower_short = Mobile Flamethrower: Assault +1, Ground Attack +1
tech_flamethrower_info = Designed to be portable by a single man, the flamethrower consist of gas cylinders strapped to the soldier's back. These are filled with pressurised air that - upon opening a nozzle - blows a stream of burning oil through a tube aimed toward the enemy.

tech_at_grenade = Improvised Anti-Tank Weapons
tech_at_grenade_short = Improvised Anti-Tank Weapons: Armour Piercing +1
tech_at_grenade_info = Without designated equipment infantry have a hard time stopping enemy tanks. The quickest solutions are the use of bundled grenade charges, solid steel rifle bullets and direct fire from trench mortars.

tech_at_rifle = Anti-Tank Rifle
tech_at_rifle_short = Anti-Tank Rifle: Armour Piercing +1
tech_at_rifle_info = An anti-tank rifle is specifically designed to penetrate the armour of vehicles, particularly tanks. These large-calibre rifles are operated by a crew of two: A gunner and an ammunition bearer.

tech_at_shell = Armour Piercing Shell
tech_at_shell_short = Armour Piercing Shell: Armour Piercing +1
tech_at_shell_info = The Armour-Piercing Shell is specifically designed to destroy enemy tanks. In order to withstand the shock of punching through armour plating it is topped by a massive extra-hard quenched steel cone. Once inside the vehicle a specific delayed percussion fuse triggers the conventional high explosive charge.

tech_aa_defense = Anti-Air Defense
tech_aa_defense_short = Anti-Air Defense: Air Attack +2
tech_aa_defense_info = The increasing use of aircraft on the battlefield drives the need for anti-air defenses. An initial step is the development of special mountings for existing guns that allow them to fire upward at airborne targets.

tech_searchlight = Searchlight
tech_searchlight_short = Searchlights: Air Attack +3
tech_searchlight_info = Searchlights are part of an organised counter-measure to night time air raids. Regulations are introduced to extinguish all lights on the streets and building windows. Airplanes are constantly patrolling at great height, coordinating their efforts with ground-based searchlights and anti-air guns.

tech_barrage_balloon = Barrage Balloon
tech_barrage_balloon_short = Barrage Balloon: Air Attack +4
tech_barrage_balloon_info = Barrage balloons are large balloons, partially filled with hydrogen. Unmanned and without any form of propulsion, they are tethered to the ground above targets which could be vulnerable to air attack. The cables hanging from the balloons make significant obstacles for any low-flying attacking aircraft, and the balloons themselves can explode if shot, equally dangerous to incoming attackers.

tech_cotton_pad_mask = Hood Gas Mask
tech_cotton_pad_mask_short = Hood Gas Mask: Anti-gas +1
tech_cotton_pad_mask_info = As an improvement over makeshift mouth pads and veils, the hood mask consists of a gas-permeable fabric treated with chemicals that neutralise poison gases. It covers the soldier's entire head and is tucked into his tunic, while transparent eyepieces provide visibility.

tech_filter_respirator_mask = Filter Respirator Mask
tech_filter_respirator_mask_short = Filter Respirator Mask: Anti-gas +2
tech_filter_respirator_mask_info = The next step in gas mask design filters poison gases through a canister impregnated with neutralizing chemicals. The mask itself is made of thinly rubberised canvas, attached to the cannister through a rubber hose.

tech_depth_charge = Depth Charge
tech_depth_charge_short = Depth Charge: Anti-Submarine Attack +2
tech_depth_charge_info = Depth charges are steel canisters filled with TNT explosives. After sinking to a certain depth a hydrostatic valve triggers it to explode. Even without direct impact, the shock of the explosion can be enough to damage a nearby submarine and force it to surface.

tech_depth_charge_projector = Depth Charge Projector
tech_depth_charge_projector_short = Depth Charge Projector: Anti-Submarine Attack +2
tech_depth_charge_projector_info = Special installations mounted on the centerline of the ship throw depth charges over the sides. This delivery method causes a better spreading of the explosives and is less dangerous that rolling them off the stern of the ship.

tech_passive_hydrophone = Passive Hydrophone
tech_passive_hydrophone_short = Passive Hydrophone: Anti-Submarine Attack +2
tech_passive_hydrophone_info = As a measure to detect and locate enemy submarines a pair of highly directional microphones are mounted under the ship's hull. Each microphone feeding into a corresponding earphone, rotating this device allows the operator to get an accurate bearing on the sound source.

tech_chlorine_gas = Chlorine Gas
tech_chlorine_gas_short = Chlorine Gas: Gas Effect +2
tech_chlorine_gas_info = International treaties prohibit the launching of projectiles containing poisonous gas, but war tends to break conventions. Chlorine is a powerful irritant that can inflict damage to the eyes, nose, throat and lungs. At high concentrations and prolonged exposure it can cause death by asphyxiation.

tech_phosgene_gas = Phosgene Gas
tech_phosgene_gas_short = Phosgene Gas: Gas Effect +2
tech_phosgene_gas_info = While chlorine gas quickly causes violent coughing, phosgene gas takes much longer before effects are noticed. This causes more of the substance to be inhaled, resulting in much more damage; thus making this gas even more effective as a weapon.

tech_mustard_gas = Mustard Gas
tech_mustard_gas_short = Mustard Gas: Gas Effect +2
tech_mustard_gas_info = Mustard gas does not only affect the respiratory systems but also causes blistering of the skin. It remains dangerous in the soil and soldiers' clothes, potentially causing additional casualties weeks after release.

tech_hydro_pneumatic_howitzer = Hydropneumatic Howitzer
tech_hydro_pneumatic_howitzer_short = Hydropneumatic Howitzer: Ground Attack +2, Bombard +1,
tech_hydro_pneumatic_howitzer_info = A hydropneumatic mechanism keeps the gun’s trail and wheels perfectly still during the firing sequence. The barrel's recoil energy is first taken up by a cylinder containing a charge of compressed air and hydraulic oil, which then returns the barrel forward to the firing position. This system permits even heavy howitzers to sustain an effective firing rate.

tech_aerial_observation = Aerial Artillery Coordination
tech_aerial_observation_short = Aerial Artillery Coordination: Ground Attack +2, Bombard +2, Shock +1
tech_aerial_observation_info = Early methods of coorperation between aerial observers and artillery batteries involved the flier to drop written fire adjustments until the target was hit. With the appearance of a lightweight wireless radio communication, more effective procedures can be developed. The airman can now transmit signals to the ground station. The latter however still has to communicate through visual signals, since the aircraft cannot carry both a transmitter and receiver.

tech_aerial_photography = Aerial Intelligence Gathering
tech_aerial_photography_short = Aerial Intelligence Gathering: Ground Attack +3, Bombard +3, Shock +2
tech_aerial_photography_info = The use of aircraft in warfare led to great changes in intelligence gathering and tactics. For the first time with the advent of the Camera it was possible for an army to obtain a broad view of the enemy's territory, the positions of his troops and ships, and the state of his defenses.

tech_creeping_barrage = Creeping Barrage
tech_creeping_barrage_short = Creeping Barrage: Shock +2, Bombard +2
tech_creeping_barrage_info = A creeping barrage maintains two or more curtains of fire, one behind the other. The rearmost pattern ceases fire according to a preset time table and is adjusted to open fire again just in front of the forward edge of the barrage. This is repeated to keep the barrage creeping forward without ever ceasing. Further perfection of the method allow the barrage to wheel or even comb back and forth across the same ground to catch any defenders re-emerging after the barrage has passed.

tech_sound_ranging = Sound Ranging
tech_sound_ranging_short = Sound Ranging: Counter-Battery Attack +2
tech_sound_ranging_info = Sound ranging techniques are used to determine the coordinates of a hostile artillery battery. An array of microphones records signals from the guns firing onto photographic film. After processing this information, it provides the range and bearing data needed for effective counter battery fire.

tech_bomb_rack = Bomb Rack
tech_bomb_rack_short = Bomb Rack: Unlocks Bomber unit
tech_bomb_rack_info = Early methods of dropping bombs relied upon the pilot or observer throwing them over the sides of the aircraft. Mechanical release of bombs attached below the aircraft allow more heavy bombs to be used, as well as providing a more accurate delivery system.

tech_heavy_bomber = Heavy Bomber
tech_heavy_bomber_short = Heavy Bomber: Air Attack +1, Base Defense +1, Ground Attack +1, Bombard +1
tech_heavy_bomber_info = Large, multi-engine aircraft specifically designed to carry large payloads allow strategic bombing campaigns far away from the frontlines. Damage to infrastructure and morale will gradually weaken the enemy's ability to wage war.

tech_push_pull_configuration = Enclosed Cabin
tech_push_pull_configuration_short = Enclosed Cabin: Air Attack +1, Base Defense +1, High Defense +1, Strategic Attack +10
tech_push_pull_configuration_info = As bomber aircraft become larger, crews can be fully enclosed inside the fuselage. This allows them to operate more effective on higher altitudes, being less affected by cold and wind.

tech_all_centerline_armament = All-Centerline Armament
tech_all_centerline_armament_short = All-Centerline Armament: Naval Attack +1, Base Defense +1
tech_all_centerline_armament_info = When all turrets are placed on the centerline of the vessel, it allows the entire main battery to fire on the broadside. This is combined with a superfiring layout, raising one turret so it can fire over another immediately on front of it. This layout provides the best firepower from a fixed number of guns.

tech_torpedo_bulge = Anti-Torpedo Bulge
tech_torpedo_bulge_short = Anti-Torpedo Bulge: Base Defense +2
tech_torpedo_bulge_info = The bulge is a lateral compartment at the waterline level that is isolated from the ship's internal volume. It is part air-filled, and part free-flooding. In theory, a torpedo strike will rupture and flood the outer air-filled component of the bulge and the inner water-filled part will dissipate the shock and absorb explosive fragments, leaving the ship's main hull structurally intact. Transverse bulkheads within the bulge limit flooding throughout the entirety of the structure.

tech_razzle_dazzle_camouflage = Razzle Dazzle Camouflage
tech_razzle_dazzle_camouflage_short = Razzle Dazzle Camouflage: Base Defense +1
tech_razzle_dazzle_camouflage_info = The Razzle Dazzle camouflage scheme consists of complex patterns of geometric shapes in contrasting colours, interrupting and intersecting each other. Unlike most other forms of camouflage, it does not offer concealment but makes it more difficult to estimate a target's range, speed and heading.

tech_all_or_nothing_armour = All or Nothing Armour
tech_all_or_nothing_armour_short = All or Nothing Armour: Base Defense +1, High Defense +2
tech_all_or_nothing_armour_info = The "All or Nothing" armour layout discards any type of light to medium armour on a warship, while strengthening the armour of vital parts such as the ammunition, engine and control rooms. This results in a ship of the same weight as other armour layouts, but with a higher survivability against the heaviest types of projectiles.

tech_tripple_gun_turret = Triple Gun Turret
tech_tripple_gun_turret_short = Triple Gun Turret: Naval Attack +1
tech_tripple_gun_turret_info = An alternative to fitting more turrets in a battleship layout is to put three or even four guns in each turret. Fewer turrets means the ship can be shorter or more space can be devoted to other machinery.

tech_diesel_electric_propulsion = Dual Shaft Propulsion
tech_diesel_electric_propulsion_short = Dual Shaft Propulsion: Base Defense +2
tech_diesel_electric_propulsion_info = Twin propulsion shafts, each connected to an individual diesel-electric engine, provide a significant boost to power over the simpler single shaft design, which requires a significantly larger engine to achieve comparable power levels. As well as a higher top speed, twin shafts also provided more redundcancy during operations, allowing submarines to retain propulsion when damaged or when a mechanical failure occurs.

tech_external_torpedo_storage = External Torpedo Storage
tech_external_torpedo_storage_short = External Torpedo Storage: Naval Attack +1
tech_external_torpedo_storage_info = The time a submarine can operate effectively far from port depends largely on the number of reserve torpedoes it can carry. Internal storage space is limited but the development of external torpedo containers significantly increases the capacity. Although these torpedos can only be brought in after surfacing, they allow the submarine to follow a convoy and strike night after night.

tech_minelaying_gear = Minelaying Gear
tech_minelaying_gear_short = Minelaying Gear: Naval Attack +1
tech_minelaying_gear_info = Equipping submarines with minelaying gear allows them to mine in enemy waters and supply routes. Dropped through vertical chutes inside the forward part of the hull, the mine uses a soluble plug to delay arming of the explosives until the submarine is clear.

tech_additional_torpedo_tubes = Additional Torpedo Tubes
tech_additional_torpedo_tubes_short = Additional Torpedo Tubes: Naval Attack +1
tech_additional_torpedo_tubes_info = The more torpedo tubes a submarine carries, the more damage it can deal in a short period of time. Since the first explosion will warn the enemy of its presence, the addition of more launching tubes in the stern and bow of the vessel greatly increases the attacking power of the submarine.

tech_submarine_cruiser = Submarine Cruiser
tech_submarine_cruiser_short = Submarine Cruiser: Base Defense +2
tech_submarine_cruiser_info = The effectiveness of a submarine is largely determined by its operational range and how long it can operate independantly in the open sea. Large, heavily armed Submarine Cruisers emphasise on endurance, sea-keeping, increased torpedo capacity and large deck guns at the cost of a high movement speed.

tech_caterpillar_combat_vehicle = Caterpillar Combat Vehicle
tech_caterpillar_combat_vehicle_short = Caterpillar Combat Vehicle: Unlocks Armour unit
tech_caterpillar_combat_vehicle_info = Inspired by tractor designs using caterpillar tracks to plough through difficult terrain, an armoured and armed vehicle may provide an answer to crossing enemy trenches and barbed wire entanglements.

tech_additional_armour = Spaced Armour Plating
tech_additional_armour_short = Spaced Armour Plating: Ground Attack +1, Base Defense +3, Shock +1
tech_additional_armour_info = Placing two plates of armour spaced a distance apart increases the protection of the vehicle. Explosive projectiles detonate on the outer plates before they reach the inner hull, thus reducing the damage done to the latter.

tech_light_tank_design = Light Tank Design
tech_light_tank_design_short = Light Tank Design: Ground Attack +1, Base Defense +1, Shock +1, Assault +1
tech_light_tank_design_info = Lighter tank designs are not intended to replace existing heavy tank programs, but to supplement them. While the latter can punch through heavy enemy defenses, light tanks can use their speed to exploit the breakthrough and overrun enemy artillery, command posts and communications in the rear.

tech_rigid_airship = Rigid Airship
tech_rigid_airship_short = Rigid Airship: Strategic Attack +10, Base Defense +1, High Defense +2
tech_rigid_airship_info = A rigid airship is a type of airship in which the envelope retained its shape by the use of an internal structural framework. Such aircrafts can be much larger than non-rigid airships, while the use of light alloys for the structure allow heavier bombloads and more powerful engines.

tech_defensive_positions = Defensive Positions
tech_defensive_positions_short = Defensive Positions: Base Defense = 1, Air Attack +2
tech_defensive_positions_info = While the maximum operational height of airships keeps improving, so does the performance of enemy fighter aircraft. This drives the need to equip the vessel with several machine gun positions, spread across the ship. Weapons are placed in the gondolas as well as on the front, rear and top side of the framework.

tech_observation_car = Observation Car
tech_observation_car_short = Observation Car: Base Defense +2, High Defense +1
tech_observation_car_info = Large airships commonly carry a gondola to weight its free-hanging radio antenna wire. By developing this into a larger observation car, the observer inside the gondola can relay orders on navigation and targeting while the airship operates high above the clouds, out of reach of enemy searchlights and anti-air guns.

tech_streamlined_framework = Streamlined Framework
tech_streamlined_framework_short = Streamlined Framework: High Defense +1, Strategic Attack +5
tech_streamlined_framework_info = Streamlining of an airship's duralumin framework and a simplified tail with cruciform fins result in the most optimal and aerodynamic shape.

tech_seaplane_tender = Seaplane Tender
tech_seaplane_tender_short = Seaplane Tender: Ground Attack +1, Shock + 1
tech_seaplane_tender_info = A seaplane tender is a ship that provides facilities for operating seaplanes. The airplanes are stored and maintained in hangars while using cranes to lower the aircraft into the sea for take-off and to recover them after landing. The inclusion of aircraft in a fleet allow for reconnaissance and bombing raids to support a land operation.

tech_take_off_platform = Take Off Platform
tech_take_off_platform_short = Take Off Platform: Ground Attack +1, Air Attack +1, Shock + 1
tech_take_off_platform_info = Launch decks and platforms aboard warships and special carrier ships allow land planes to be used during naval operations. These have superior performance compared to seaplanes because they do not suffer from the drag and weight of the floats. The inability to land on water does require the aircraft to find a land based airfield after completing its mission.

tech_barbed_wire = Barbed Wire
tech_barbed_wire_short = Barbed Wire: Entrenchment Level Limit +1
tech_barbed_wire_info = Barbed wire laid to a significant depth in front of trenches prevents direct charges on the defending force. While exposed to enemy fire it can easily be replaced, and rarely enough damage can be done to defeat its purpose. Even special high explosive shells often fail to clear a path, instead pushing together an even denser mess of wire entanglements.

tech_pillbox = Pillbox
tech_pillbox_short = Concrete Pillbox: Entrenchment Level Limit +1
tech_pillbox_info = Pillboxes are concrete dug-in guard posts, normally equipped with loopholes through which to fire weapons. They are in effect a trench firing step hardened to protect against small-arms fire and grenades and raised to improve the field of fire.

tech_concrete_dugout = Concrete Dugouts
tech_concrete_dugout_short = Concrete Dugouts: Entrenchment Level Limit +1
tech_concrete_dugout_info = The ultimate form of defense relies on defense in depth: A lightly defended outpost line to slow down and disorganise the advancing enemy, followed by a "Battle Zone" covered with deep and wide trenches, thick belts of barbed wire, as well as steel-reinforced, concrete machine-gun positions, bunkers, tunnels and command posts.

tech_armed_fighter = Armed Aircraft
tech_armed_fighter_short = Armed Aircraft: Air Attack +2, Ground Attack +1
tech_armed_fighter_info = Aircraft specifically designed and designated for attacking enemy aircraft opens a new form of warfare: the battle for the skies. The main task of early fighter aircraft is to protect friendly reconnaissance planes, as well as hunting down those of the enemy. Such fighter aircraft are designed for speed and armed with light machine guns.

tech_synchronisation_gear = Synchronisation Gear
tech_synchronisation_gear_short = Synchronisation Gear: Air Attack +2, Base Defense +2, Shock +2
tech_synchronisation_gear_info = The most effective way to attack an enemy aircraft is to aim the whole aircraft toward the target. In order to achieve this the machine guns must fire either over or through the propeller arc. The latter can be achieved by synchronising the machine gun trigger with the rotation of the propeller blades. This synchronisation gear prevents the gun from firing when the gun barrel is blocked by a propeller blade.

tech_inline_engine = In-Line Water Cooled Engine
tech_inline_engine_short = In-Line Water Cooled Engine: Air Attack +2, Base Defense +1, Ground Attack +1, High Defense +2
tech_inline_engine_info = The in-line engine, with banks rather than rows of cylinders, guaranteed optimum balance, therefore producing fewer, smaller vibrations. This, combined with water cooling of the engine allows the engine to produce greater power. Aside from granting greater speed and manoeuvrability these engines also allow aircraft to reach higher altitudes than previously possible, granting a significant advantage in air combat.

tech_reinforced_fusilage = Reinforced Fuselage
tech_reinforced_fusilage_short = Reinforced Fuselage: Air Attack +1, Base Defense +2, High Defense +2, Ground Attack +1
tech_reinforced_fusilage_info = Stronger wing spars, heavier wing ribs, and reinforced fuselage allows the flimsy aircraft of the early war to engage in dogfights with enemy aircraft and survive initial contact. Improvements in the strength of aircraft also provides advantages in the mounting of machine guns, whose recoil puts considerable strain on the fuselage.

The incendiary, high explosive, fragmentation and shrapnel shells each serve a different purpose, each increasing the effectiveness of bombardments of different targets.

tech_flash_spotting = Flash Spotting
tech_flash_spotting_short = Flash Spotting: Counter-Battery Attack +2
tech_flash_spotting_info = Counter-battery fire relied on ground or air-based artillery observers noticing the source of the artillery fire, due to detected muzzle flashes or smoke.

tech_bomb_sight = Bomb Sight
tech_bomb_sight_short = Bomb Sight: High Defense +1, Bombard +1, Ground attack +2, Strategic Attack +5
tech_bomb_sight_info = An effective bomb sight does not only take into account aircraft altitude and speed but also calculates "drift": the sideways motion of the bombs due to wind. Through a mechanical system, the correct settings can be set through levers, wheels and spirit levels, returning the correct position of the sightings to hit the target.

tech_centralised_fire_control = Centralised Fire Control
tech_centralised_fire_control_short = Centralised Fire Control: Naval Attack +2
tech_centralised_fire_control_info = In the director system of centralised fire control all guns on a single ship are laid from a central position placed as high as possible above the bridge. It ended with it mired in a war that would annihilate a generation of young men and sweep away most of the crowned heads of Europe and their empires. When the Great War began that summer, none foresaw its scale or horror. There was nearly universal confidence that the conflict would be swift -- over certainly before the end of the year -- and not terribly unpleasant.;;For a generation prior to 1914 Europe had been an armed camp saved from open conflict by an intricate web of treaties constructed by Otto von Bismarck. But the mixture of imperial competition, nationalist antagonisms, and military expansion kept these diplomatic arrangements under maximum tension. Eventually, when Gavrilo Princip assassinated the Austrian Archduke Franz Ferdinand that summer, the tension broke.;;Europe cascaded into war. The Austro-Hungarian Empire, determined to avenge the death of its royal heir, sought conflict with Serbia, the ultimate author of the crime. Germany backed her ally Russia in turn could not allow her Serbian client to be crushed or see its own influence in the Balkans destroyed. France mobilized in response to German moves, and Germany declared war in response to Russia's mobilization. England in turn fell into war with a doomed effort to enforce respect for Belgian neutrality. And so it was that the lights went out all over Europe.;;In 1914 Germany's vast military was the epitome of efficiency and modernity. It was "the army that ran like clockwork". France's army was on scale with Germany's but relied on an emotive doctrine of "elan vital" that emphasized a spirited attack and took no account of the importance or lethality of modern weaponry. England's Expeditionary force was small, it was the Royal Navy that served as the great fulcrum of British power.;;Russia's might lay in her numbers and vastness, while the armies of the Austro-Hungarian empire drew their principal and perhaps only strength from alliance with Germany. Perhaps no other war began with greater enthusiasm or ended in greater mutual disillusion.;;But history can now be rewritten. Can Germany vindicate her national vision by dominating Europe militarily? Or will France avenge the loss of her provinces to Germany in 1870 and reclaim her national pride? Can Franz Joseph punish Serbia and restore his crumbling Austro-Hungarian empire? Will Russia prove that she is not lost in another era and doomed by her backwardness? Can England show that it is still a dominant player in continental politics? The answers can now be written anew...

historical_1915 = 1915 began with stalemate rapidly developing on the Western Front. After the German attack on Paris was halted at the First Battle of the Marne, there began the “Race to the Sea” in late 1914 as each side sought to outflank the other. The race ended with the First Battle of Ypres in Belgium, and no strategic result was achieved. Trench lines began to span the length of the battlefront.;;New weapons, strategies, and generals were brought forth to contend with the static pattern of warfare developing in the West. Von Falkenhayn replaced Moltke at the head of the German army. Poison gas was used successfully for the first time against Allied forces in April. The British perfected a ruthless blockade of Germany, hoping to starve her rapidly into defeat, the result was to force Germany to develop the first truly efficient war economy of any of the major powers. Germany stepped up submarine warfare, sinking the liner Lusitania and creating a diplomatic crisis with the Americans.;;The Allies, gaining poor results from offensive operations in France, sought success by creating a new strategic dimension in the Mediterranean, yet the Ottoman Empire, now engaged on the side of the Central Powers, resisted their efforts to penetrate the Dardanelles and turned the landings at Gallipoli into a debacle.;;Russia had important successes against the Austro-Hungarians, even capturing key positions in the Carpathians, but German counter-blows during the massive Gorlice-Tarnow offensive brought crushing defeat. Most of Russian Poland was lost that summer and a million Russian soldiers went into captivity. Warsaw fell to the Germans in August. Italy had declared for the Allies early in the year and began the first of a series of futile offensives on the Isonzo River, intended to capture the great prize of Trieste. Bulgaria’s entry late in 1915 on the side of the Central Powers had led to the rout of Serbian forces from their own territory and the creation of a stable corridor of communication with their Ottoman ally.;;With these results Germany, at the end of 1915, seemed in the stronger position. Moreover, Germany, in resisting allied attacks in the Champagne, Artois, and Belgium, had created a method of defence in depth that would prove almost unanswerable on the Western Front. Can you as the Allied player alter these results? Or, as the German player, can you heed von Falkenhayn’s fear that Germany cannot win a long war against three Great Powers and press more rapidly toward final victory?

historical_1916 = 1916 opened with reasons for Allied optimism. England began to field a truly massive army for the first time, and at the Chantilly Conference at the very end of 1915 the allies had put together a common military strategy. Russia had solved her munitions crisis and the Eastern front had quieted after the enormous losses of the previous year.;;But in February began the epic battle of Verdun, a cataclysm designed by General von Falkenhayn to crush France under the sheer weight of German artillery and bleed her literally to death. 1200 guns fired 2 million shells in 8 hours on an eight-mile front to start the onslaught, and the barrages scarcely stopped over the next 8 months in what became the longest battle of World War 1. 700,000 men would die and more than 40 million rounds of artillery would be fired before exhaustion finally ended it in December. Though Germany’s strategic hopes were disappointed, Verdun brought France near to collapse and in the long run finished her as a great power.;;Russia responded to France’s emergency by launching a doomed attack at Lake Naroch the following month. It gained nothing but the loss of 100,000 Russians. England was slow to throw its new army in support, the great Battle of the Somme did not begin until the end of June when a week-long artillery bombardment commenced. What followed when British troops began the actual assault changed Britain forever. Twenty thousand British troops were killed in one day for almost no gain. The pattern of stalemate continued at sea.;;The German High Seas Fleet finally came forth to challenge England’s control of the North Sea but gained only a limited tactical success at the Battle of Jutland. Only on the Eastern Front came victory. The Brusilov offensive against the Austrians that summer produced an advance of 60 miles and the capture of more than 300,000 prisoners. It was Russia’s greatest military success of the war and a key factor in bringing Rumania into the war on the side of the Entente. But, like the failed operations on the Western Front, it was enormously costly in lives -- Russia took over a million casualties -- and in the end brought no decisive strategic result.;;By the end of 1916 the pattern of the Great War was utterly clear: stalemate and slaughter. Can you, the player, find an answer to these calamities?

historical_1917 = Germany’s peace feelers at the end of 1916 had gotten nowhere. With food shortages during the “Turnip Winter” of 1916-17 showing the efficacy of the British blockade and the Western Front locked in stalemate, Germany turned again to unrestricted submarine warfare early in 1917 in hopes of collapsing the British economy. That and the infamous Zimmerman Telegram brought America into the war. German calculations that American strength could not muster in time to make a difference would be proven wrong.;;In April began the Nivelle Offensive, France’s great bid on the Chemin des Dames and the river Aisne to “win the war in 48 hours”. Despite the use of innovative tactics it was another bloody failure. Widespread mutiny broke out in an exhausted French Army that had lost nearly one million men since the start of the war. General Nivelle, architect of the attack, was dismissed.;;Revolution, sparked by a women's bread riot in Petrograd during February, engulfed Russia, and Czar Nicholas, pressured by the generals, abdicated in March. The Russian army maintained its front but was finished as an effective offensive force.;;General Haig led England into the Flanders campaign. Its initial goal was to straighten out the Ypres salient, where what the British Army called “normal wastage” ran to 7,000 men per week. Much of the action focused on the insignificant village known as Passchendaele. After several months, and another 400,000 casualties, it was taken, but all hopes of a decisive success had drowned in blood and a sea of mud that literally swallowed men and horses whole.;;The Italians, under General Cadorna, launched the Eleventh Battle of the Isonzo. Modest success at the cost of 40,000 dead had pushed the Italian army forward and left it vulnerable to counterattack. It came at German and Austro-Hungarian hands in October. The Battle of Caporetto would prove an epic rout that nearly knocked Italy out of the war. 300,000 Italians fell prisoner and fully half of the army’s artillery was lost in a retreat of over 100 kilometers.;;As the year came to a close the tank made its first effective appearance, at Cambrai. A new doctrine of warfare was emerging, one that forecast the end of the war. But optimism was little seen among the Western Allies at the end of 1917: Bolshevik Russia signed an armistice with the Central Powers in December, freeing more than 40 Germans divisions for deployment in the West.;;As the Germans, can you master the techniques of defense in depth to withstand the Allied onslaughts on the Western Front? Or, as the Allied player, can you learn from a bitter historical record and employ a more effective strategy to wear down the Germans to the fatal degree?

historical_1918 = As 1918 opened Germany faced a do or die situation. With the Americans streaming in unanticipated numbers across the Atlantic, time was short to affect a decisive outcome in the West. In March, using the divisions freed by the collapse of Russia, Germany launched "Operation Michael", also known as the Kaiserschlacht, a vast attack aimed at the juncture of the British and French armies. It was initially a profound success.;;The Germans advanced 60 kilometers along a broad front and demonstrated a mobility that had not been seen since the opening days of the war. New tactics involving surprise, infiltration, and the use of specially trained assault troops inflicted immense losses and put Britain’s back to the wall.;;Elsewhere, German attacks pushed the front far enough that German railroad guns were able to lob massive shells into Paris itself. German jubilation was intense but was doomed to fade as it became clear that the attack could not yield the decisive results that had seemed so near at the outset.;;In the summer of 1918 a tipping-point was reached in the balance of German morale. Materially, Germany was at her limit: between March and July it had lost a million men, and industrial production was in free-fall. In August, when the British counterattacked to adjust their lines near Amiens, the German army began to collapse. August 8th, what General Ludendorff called “the Black Day of the German Army”, had come. The British, surprised by success, undertook repeated attacks, and the French joined in what they termed the “Grand Offensive”.;;The Americans, new to large-scale operations, launched in their turn a major operation to clear the St. Mihiel salient near Verdun. Throughout the late summer German forces conducted a general retreat behind the Hindenburg Line. Even there they did not hold as the pace of German collapse accelerated under constant Allied pressure.;;Facing the inevitable, Austria, Bulgaria and the Ottoman Empire capitulated, terminating the existence of the Central Powers. By early October, the Hindenburg Line had ceased to exist as a military entity, and the German command was faced with the stark fact that the war was lost.;;In six months the tide of war had reversed completely. On the 9th of November a republic was proclaimed in Berlin, and the Kaiser was convinced to Abdicate and flee to neutral The Netherlands a day later. Imperial Germany was finished, and so was the War to End All Wars.;;Can you, as the German player, use fresh tactics and troops to succeed in this desperate year, or will you fail at the last just as Ludendorff did? Can you as the Allies absorb Germany’s greatest blow and carry on to victory?
